Is coffee beneficial for good digestive health? Must know facts.

Research on the impact of coffee on gut health is an evolving subject. It was found that coffee contains several bioactive compounds with therapeutic properties; roasted coffee is a complex mixture of thousands of bioactive compounds, and some of them have potential health-promoting properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and many more. Studies show that caffeine is beneficial in easing problems like constipation as it triggers peristalsis and leads to bowel movements. But due to this effect, it may cause diarrhoea in some people. Coffee was thought to cause ulcers but later it was found that there was no link between the two. Few studies reveal that coffee increases the number of two types of beneficial bacteria but to ascertain these findings further studies are needed. A recent study on the gut-brain axis revealed that most regular coffee consumers experienced the least negative gastrointestinal symptoms like heartburn, abdominal discomfort, etc., but had positive anti-stress effects with a slight increase in blood pressure.

Some people are sensitive to coffee, which causes indigestion, heartburn and other gastric symptoms. Caffeinated beverages may worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in a small percentage of people. Moderate consumption of coffee in habitual drinkers may be beneficial for overall health; evidence of beneficial effects on heart health, stroke, and other metabolic diseases do exist.  But it is good to either cut down or avoid drinking coffee if you are sensitive to symptoms such as heartburn, nervousness or insomnia.
